Default Haldex, Haldex, Haldex; I'm sick of Haldex

Decided to take a vacation day and find out what they did to my Haldex coupling. Won't know for sure until I analyze the oil but it appears that the last story I was given may be the truth. As most of you know at first coupling was filled with gear oil "as all TTs they do", then coupling was confused with differential, no coupling oil drained but Haldex filter was changed none the less. Hard for me to believe at first.

Coupling area was dry, some road dirt, blistered paint and rust stains. After draining ands wiping area some oil remains in crevices, some blistered paint and rust stains removed, exposing rusting metal.

Area under filter housing shows some sign of oil wicking on road grime, wrench mark on one flat.

Oil cartridge when loaded in caulking gun is over 2 feet long. If using 1 foot jack stands then make tubing adapter and wrap in duct tape.

Drained oil was darker than either fresh Haldex oil or gear oil (G-052-145-S2). Gear oil marked as "trans oil" on invoice is not for use in transmissions (invoice saying transaxel?). Drained oil did not have strong sulfur smell than gear oil has.

Did not see on anyone's invoice crush washer for drain plug.

P.S. Cherry Hill Audi (NJ) does not stock the Haldex filter, it has to be prepaid and special ordered. If you had your 20K service done there don't bet your life that the filter actually was changed. Clair called me back yesterday to say they have an exclusivity deal with UPS and can't ship Haldex oil since UPS requires special arrangements.

Default John, so what do you think they really did?

Just changed the rear differential fluid? Then that means they are even more clueless than you thought. They the Haldex and the rear diff are the same thing?

If I were you I would ask to see all of the Audi Certifications that the various mechanics have earned over the course of their Audi careers. Is it possible that your dealer does not have a certified Audi TT Mechanic? If the person/people are certified TT mechanics, then talk to Jason about the name of the Audi TT instructor that he had when he got trained. Maybe they are teaching things improperly.

Default Forgot to add this funny tid-bit...

Go to page 39-76 in AESIS manual, they show location of Haldex coupling filler plug and give instructions on checking level. Page 39-79 shows location of drain plug and gives instructions on how to fill from drain.

1) place drip tray underneath
2) remove drain plug
3) insert oil cartridge into gun
4) refit drain plug and tighten to 15 Nm
5) have drain plug with new sealing ring ready
6) insert gun vertically into drain hole
7) completely pump oil into Haldex clutch
8) remove gun and immediately tread in drain plug

No clue as to why you would not fill from fill hole or how you are going to pump oil into Haldex after tightening plug to 15 Nm.

This looks like good news? Doesn't appear they touched the drain plug anyway.

Btw, how hard was it to fill from drain plug? Did you change the filter, if so what did you need?

Looks promising, oil analysis will determine.
