Help Please - Engine just QUIT??
I was driving tonight (about 30 mph) and the engine just shut off. No sputter, no noise just stopped. When I got to the side of the road and tried to restart it cranks but sounds really wierd. It's hard to describe. It's like part of the normal engine noise is there, but something is missing...just a smooth whirring sound. Absolutely no attempt to catch, no sputter...nothing.
I'm thinking it's serious. The guy I bought the car from told me he changed the timing belt at 75k. I'm at 93k now. I called the Audi service department at the time and they (supposedly) confirmed it.
I would normally have searched first but I was hoping to catch one of you experts still on line.
Thanks

Cost of timing belt replacement?
What kind of damage am I looking at.
I was just reading one of your previous posts (from my search) and concluding that it was probably the tb. You described it as starter turning but no compression. That's exactly what it sounds like.
thanks,
Steve

I sincerely hope it's not your timing belt. Any chance you were out of gas?
And I'm not trying to be a **** asking -- sometimes, clusters fail, and they tell you you've got a lot more fuel than you do...

Unfortunately...>>
It sounds like you toasted a TB. Figure $2-4K repair depending on Valve and Piston damage. The verification you had of a previous replacement could have been correct....Unfortunately some just change the Belt, and not the parts (water pump and tensioner) that often fail and cause the belt breakage...Good luck.
