How can you tell if a 225 is a VVT engine or not? Was there a build date swapover?

How can you tell if a 225 is a VVT engine or not? Was there a build date swapover?
Can't seem to find an Audi or Bentley reference to it. Says the 225 cutover occurred in the '03 model year but that there were '03s with and witout it. Guessing there will be a solenoid on the head like on my S4. Will pull the cover to look tonight. Mines a 12/02 build so... kind of 1/2 way through the 2003 model build range.
Any info appreciated.

simply because of the variable valve timing capabilities, therefore taking advantage of more horsepower.
