How Difficult Is It To Replace a Crank Speed Sensor?
They're a PITA, because they're out-of-the-way, behind stuff, and hard to access, but that's the only thing which makes them difficult. Other than that, it's just one bolt and one electrical connector.
Seriously, if your dealer wants $3k to change one, find a new dealer, NOW. That's a _major_ ripoff.

Theoretically, if the tab broke just right, the sensor could be pushed further into the hole, and rub against the crank, causing it damage.
That's _very_ unlikely. The sensors have an o-ring seal, fit pretty tightly, and there's nothing to push them in. I think they also have a ring of plastic around the body, which would keep them from being pushed too far into the hole. Even if it went in, the mostly plastic and copper sensor is more apt to get destroyed than the steel crank.
Bad sensors are a common problem. Dealers seem to be clueless about them, because bad ones typically do NOT throw a diagnostic code. I would bet that your dealer is assuming since there's no code, the sensor is good, so it must be the crank.
The typical symptoms of an intermittently bad sensor are that the engine dies when it gets warm, and won't start until it's cooled off. If the sensor has completely failed, the engine just won't start.
I doubt very much that you need anything more than a sensor. Your's might be a just bit more difficult to remove than normal, if the tab is broken.

Instead, I had the car towed home, replaced the sensor myself and it started just fine.
