Default How Difficult Is It To Replace a Crank Speed Sensor?

My dealership said it wouldn't be covered under my warranty some how, so i'm forced to do it myself since i don't have a spare $3k for them. So has anyone ever done it, is there maybe a how to (long shot) anywhere? I have any tools i'll need.

Default I'll do it for $2k...

I'll even pay my airfare to get there, assuming you're in CONUS. :-)

They're a PITA, because they're out-of-the-way, behind stuff, and hard to access, but that's the only thing which makes them difficult. Other than that, it's just one bolt and one electrical connector.

Seriously, if your dealer wants $3k to change one, find a new dealer, NOW. That's a _major_ ripoff.

Default They said the entire bottom end would need to be replaced.

All i know is they said the tab the sensor is on broke off. They said the sensor is fine, it's the crank that needs replacing. I have no idea because i am no audi mechanic. If the tab on the crank that holds the sensor breaks, couldn't you just replace the tab?

Default The sensor...

<center><img src="http://www.flatsurface.com/pics/speedsensor.jpg"></center><p>plugs into a hole, and in held in place by the tab. #5 in the picture.

Theoretically, if the tab broke just right, the sensor could be pushed further into the hole, and rub against the crank, causing it damage.

That's _very_ unlikely. The sensors have an o-ring seal, fit pretty tightly, and there's nothing to push them in. I think they also have a ring of plastic around the body, which would keep them from being pushed too far into the hole. Even if it went in, the mostly plastic and copper sensor is more apt to get destroyed than the steel crank.

Bad sensors are a common problem. Dealers seem to be clueless about them, because bad ones typically do NOT throw a diagnostic code. I would bet that your dealer is assuming since there's no code, the sensor is good, so it must be the crank.

The typical symptoms of an intermittently bad sensor are that the engine dies when it gets warm, and won't start until it's cooled off. If the sensor has completely failed, the engine just won't start.

I doubt very much that you need anything more than a sensor. Your's might be a just bit more difficult to remove than normal, if the tab is broken.

Default When mine went bad, it DID throw a code -- yet the dealer still did not think that was the issue!

The code was "engine speed sensor faulty" or something to that extent. The dealer declared the sensor was fine and wanted to replace the ECU for $1000.

Instead, I had the car towed home, replaced the sensor myself and it started just fine.

Default So technically they could be just pulling my chain?

I'm going to have it towed home. It's taken 6 months of nothing, it's been so long since i've seen this car. Last time i saw it, there was an ant infestation in the interior. I'm going to strip the car down when it gets back to my house.
