Howdy.
I have three more weeks in Santa Clarita, so let me know if there are any TT'ers planning trips, I'd love to meet you and tag along.
For my initial question... This morning on the way to work, it seemed like my coolant temperature indicator gauge stayed well to the left of `C' for about three miles, then moved quickly to operating temp. I haven't been paying attention before, so is this something that happens every time I start it cold, or is something bizarre happening. ie: Is the sensor bypassed when the thermostat is closed?
Thanks all,
--Tim--
I am from the greater SLO metropolitan area, Cal Poly trained in Materials Science and Engineering, and have lived both in San Luis and in the north county over the course of the last several years. The new house I am moving into is on the west side of Templeton, just off of 46. I am temporarily consulting in the Santa Clarita Area, last day July 12.
pure and unadulterated:
If you couldn't tell before, I enjoy turning wrenches. Pushrod Porsches are my passion: 356, 912, 914; and I am confident in my ability with those types. I have a friend, who is quite mod happy, that I helped transplant a 16v 2.0L into his Mk II GTi, so I am somewhat familiar with the VW four. The only reason I would oppose the modification of a vehicle is if it is a daily driver. I will be driving the TT every day, and I need it to be as reliable as possible. When it becomes my secondary car, reliability may be sacrificed for the benefit of fun, which is the essence of the Manx: A car with decent drivability that is reliable enough to take into the middle of the desert, quick enough to keep the local rice in check, and hit a few of the local back roads at speed. Yes, it is fun. Yes, it is quick. But it is not an all season car, nor one that I can commute with. I am happy with the TT as it came from the factory, but if someday I need more, modification will take place.
powerband / gears:
One fact that I found amusing was that the shift points (speed at redline) were similar between the Manx and 225 TT. First ~30, Second ~55, Third ~85. Also, the powerband in both cars come on near the same engine speed ~2500rpm. Both exhibit a similar rush of power at that point as well: when cam comes alive in the Manx, and the turbo spools up in the TT.
Thanks for all of your interest, I'll be around.
