Default I F'ing hate torx screws....

i'm trying to get the ones that hold the 2 aluminum brackets on by the ash tray.... so i can screw the gauge pak in...

only problem is they're WAY overtightened, and only the top 2 will come off on each side... the bottom 2 stripped...

there are better ways to add a cool 'euro' flare to a car, than using a rediculously ineffective format for EVERY screw on the car...

i wish i could have someone just replace every f'ing screw in this vehicle with a phillips or something... what a pain in my ***....

anyone have any suggestions on how to get these off? my dash looks like *** until i can figure something out... doublesided tape wouldn't hold the pak...

Try using a dremel tool to cut a slot in the head so that you can use a screwdriver. This is just a suggestion. It might help

Default thats not a bad idea...

the only problem is these are recessed in the aluminum... so i don't think i can cut the head without scratching up the aluminum...

if they weren't recessed, i'd buy you a drink right now!

How deeply recessed are they? You may want to try an easy-out, if it is not do deep. Since you turn any easy-out ccw it would cut into the area where it is already stripped and may be able to break it loose.

Default other option.......

Its a bit messy, but you could use a drill bit and remove the heads. Need to choose a bit that is a little larger than the threaded part of screw. Drill down until head of screw is gone. Remove the brace and try and deal with the remaining threaded part with vice grips. Once the head is removed, over tightness should be gone unless the threads are seized.

Hope this helps.

Heading off to work.

Default Bob Villa

Doesn't he push a Craftsman thing to take out stripped screws?

Default hhmmm, typically there is more bite on a Torx head then on a flathead

or phillips head screw....Are you sure you used the right Torx bit size?

Default maybe more bite, but they strip a lot easier, especially if they're not made well...

and i think the REAL issue is that they were WAY beyond overtightened... but it wouldn't have become such an ordeal if torx didn't strip so easily....

some of these ideas look good... i may have to just drill it out... not looking forward to that...

Whoa! Torx screws (usually) are easier to tighten/loosen because the tool grips them better.
