boost machine has not been cranked up - VAG tells me it's "sporadic" - any idea what gives? kind of annoying to lose all power in traffic - one day it could get downright scary if not deadly..... luckily a rolling restart took care of the issue but I like to avoid those wherever possible..... any thoughts?

From the Bentley if this is the same code:

17743/17744 - Engine torque monitoring Control limit exceeded

Check Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
Check coolant temperature sensor
Check Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
Large leak; check hose setup

Default A couple of options come to mind ...

A bad MAF (as Evan pointed out). This should be easy to test- either disconnect it and see if the car runs fine (a bit rich, but should not go into limp mode if MAF is bad) and/or log a couple of runs to redline in 2nd/3rd with the VAG (block 02/03 or 32/33 if I recall) and check the m/g readings for the MAF.

Or, your cluster is on its way out- that was the issue on mine with the car randomly going limp or shutting off. A bad cluster can give off very wild symptoms ...

Default it was 75 degrees and low/no humid and I was not onthe boost at the time....

but I can de-tune it as I did a few weeks back but I am nowhere near the limit (although I guess the car is telling me otherwise, eh?)
