Does anybody have a list of Audi approved engine oil for the 1.8T? I don't have access to my manual - as I am out of the country, and have been for 3 months.

I have been checking this site when I can and can't wait to start modding when I get back in a couple weeks. The obsession begins!

Synthetic 5w30. Mobil 1 is most common around here.

Or if you can find the Mobil 1 Euro blend 0w-40 that's pretty darn good too.

Default I believe that 0W-40 is the only Audi approved Mobil 1 oil . . .

check out the article on oil in the new Audi Quattro quarterly. I have been using 5W-30 but I think I will switch to 0W-40.

Default Funny oil story......

I was dropping my car off at the dealer about a year ago in the winter after hours for some service and oil change and had a friend with me (who doesn't know a lot about cars). Since the dealer didn't use Mobil 1, I had put my own in the hatch so they would use that instead.

Since it was a Friday evening, the car was gonna sit for a couple days until Monday when the service dept. opened back up and my friend said (of the oil in the hatch), "Is it bad if the oil gets cold sitting here all weekend?".......... I said, "What do you think happens to the oil in the engine?"......"Oh".......

Default Second funny oil story......

My wife is walking through her parking garage one day to find a coworker bent over his engine notices oil dripping all over the ground under the engine.

She walks over and says "What's going on?".......He says that his oil light came on and he bought a couple quarts of oil and was trying to add it......Well, she looked and saw that he was trying to pour 3 quarts of oil down the dipstick tube.......She reaches over, removes the oil filler cap, hands it to him, and walks away.

Default Not if you really like your car

Sorry to be so blunt, but look at the specs on that oil. It does not hold up as well under any type of extreme conditions (which is probably why it is not on the Audi recommended list). You really need a 40 weight oil for this kind of car. Now if I could get my hands on some Kendall 5W40 synthetic I would be on that, or a synthetic from Europe, but here in the states the only oil that you can find almost everywhere that is also recommended for that car is 0W40 Mobil 1. The base stock (and specs) for the other Mobil 1 oils are not nearly as good. This has to do with the lawsuit with Castrol and a chance in Mobil 1's philosophy after they lost that lawsuit.

That is why you will only see ther VW, Porsche etc. certification on Mobil 1 0W40 but none of the other Mobil 1 weights.

Default It's what all the VW/Audi dealers around here use.

Personally, I use a variety of differenty synthetics trying to figure out which one works best for me.

Lubro Moly 5w40 is my flavor of choice, but it's really difficult to find.

I prefer the 5w30 to the 0w40. My car doesn't seem to like the 0w stuff. Or maybe that's just me: A guy who likes to run 20w50 in his other VW's.
