Default A journey to a piece of ART.

a story by the anonymous ...

Looking back, this photo taking idea was conceptualised and evolved over the last few months. It all started 5 months ago when I was taking a coffee break from my course, in a certain office at 9th floor of PWC building. Looking down at the roof of market street car park from where I was standing, I was telling myself, "Holy cow! this is it! A perfect spot for photoshoot!"

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/marketstreet%20carpark.jpg">

But I thought my idea was alittle crazy, and alittle shy of taking a photo shoot of my car with possibly all the office workers staring at me anonymously from the surrounding buildings. It was thus shelved to a corner until on 5th July, I realised I am not the only crazy man on earth. I led Karsoon to the car park, after cornering around the spiral car park for 9 floors, his eyeballs almost dropped out of his wide open eyes as he exclaimed "Man, this is heaven! Damn! how come this idiot know such a good place for photo shooting "

We snapped alot of photos of our cars, and luckily digital photography is cheap, we unanimously asked ourselves, "It will be great if we have our first VagSG photoshoot here". Karsoon posted a "Yeah or nay" thread asking for opinion, and response, although lukewarm initially, was pretty positive to give Karsoon the confidence to go all out to plan for this event!

Enough said, we decided 30th August 2003 SHALL be the day, and we had 35 VW and Audi cars registered for this event. Everybody was counting down days, and the vains had intended to have their babes SPA'ed (read as car polished and groomed) on the day before or actual itself!
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/recee.jpg">

Planning for the event was rather straight forward, except for the formation development itself. A small group of us went for a site recee few weeks before the actual day itself. It was fun with all the wierd formations brainstormed while having brain-stimulating kopi with kaya-toast at Kiliney Kopitiam. A snapshot of the photo-taking location was taken, together with some photo-chopping, give us some idea on how to optimise the limited space with so many cars.

The day had finally come, and not surprisingly, many had gone all lengths to do a good makeup for their cars on the sunny morning. With all the hardwork put in, the weather suddenly decided to play on us, it RAINED just hours before the event!

But as the saying goes, "the sun shines after a rainy day", and I guess everybody's prayers for a sunny weather were answered. At 2pm when we were supposed to meet up at Kallang Macdonald carpark, the rain miraculously stopped, and the sun shined warmly at us as if telling us "Go guys, this is your day!"

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/audi-meetup.jpg">

The folks started coming in to the meet up points slowly, and as usual, punctual is never the habit of typical Singaporean. 45 minutes later, at 2.45pm, Karsoon gathered everybody for a short briefing on the convoy and the process of photo taking. 27 cars had reported, a little shortfall from the initial registered number. Again, a typical phenomenon?

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/dilly-dally.jpg">

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/chasing-the-convoy.jpg">

At 3pm, the groups finally moved out, and 2 convoys of audi and volkswagen cars, led by ChewsChews and Passatwolf respectively, cruise from Kallang Mcdonald to our destination, via Nicol Highway, passing by the famous "Durian" theatre and driving into the heart of the Shenton way. Pretty neat convoy I must add, and I think the short and slightly congested journey did not give much time and space maneuverability to those street racers!

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/pass-by-citibank.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/esplanade.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/bay-bridge.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/leftmirror.jpg">
The scene of the entrance to the market street carpark, our photoshoot destination, was a rare sight -- 27 Volkswagen and Audi marquees lining up neatly, inching into the car park entrance.

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/waiting-at-carpark.jpg">
The convoy of VW and Audi cars paused at the 8th storey, with all the drivers just waiting ernestly to charge up to the roof top of the car park, perhaps emulating their young army days of charging a hill. Karsoon and myself went up to the roof top, and our formation exercise began!

As the car park design is spiral in nature, and limited in space, we had to hold all the cars at a storey below, and dispatched them batch by batch. Much credits must go to Passatwolf, who had also thoughtfully brought a set of walkie-talkies, for dispatching the cars up to the roof top for formation upon signal from us on the top.

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/lining-up-thelast-row.jpg">
Given the number of cars we had, we decided to have a 3 rows, 11-9-7 formation, and thought this would be the best formation you can find on earth, much better than what Alex Ferguson would have thought of. Unfortunately, the fan shape car park curves more than what we think it really was, and soon we realise we need to expand our last row with more cars as the first row will have 3-4 times lesser space to accomodate that many cars!

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/planning.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/buffer.jpg">
It did not help either with late comers and last minute gate-crasher. Soon, Passatwolf cried over the air "We have 3 more VW/audi cars that just arrived", and our immediate reaction was "Damn, how I wish these cars are matchbox toycars for me to re-arrange!"

Our special guest of honour, Terence Tan from Hotstuff magazine, immediately climbed up onto the water-tank platform to guide us on the photo angle, from where he's overlooking. It was certainly a tough job for him, having to climb high and low, possibly made him think aloud "this better be a damn bloody worthwhile photo-taking session!"

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/eye-power.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/lining-up-thelast-row.jpg">
As we finally lined up a row of 14 cars as a marker, we started to get more car dispatched up to fill up the formation. It proves to be a taunting experience for the drivers, having to maneuver within a small space, and yet to cope with the demand of the marshall to keep the car as close as possible to the next car with the right angle position. It was certainly a test of every driver skill, and at times, we just hope we could lift up the car and position it in the manner we would like it to be, be it to be 2 inch closer or 10 deg tilted to the right. Maybe the formation marshalls, comprised of Terence, Karsoon, ChewsChews and myself, should also go for hand-signal marshalling skills! And the rest who's sitting by the side watching the event? They just can't be bothered, and possibly thinking, ain't you guys alittle crazy about this?"

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com//vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/phew-what-a-parking-task.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/when-is-my-turn.jpg">
After 80 minutes of "car formation manipulation", we were 80% completed and was so hopeful for a perfect formation until we heard someone yelling, "There is a golf on his way to here!" OMG, is this golf driver trying to be funny or what? Snatching the limelight? Sure enough, 10 minutes later, we heard roaring engine notes and screeching tires noise, as a black bum-less 4-wheeler ramped and cornered up 9 storeys to the roof top. Fierce indeed the car, but I wonder if the driver knew the rest of us were giving a fierce look to the car as well, for being super-duper late!

<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/forming-the-last-bit.jpg">
<img src="http://www.zenyee.com/vaggtg/album/MegaPhotoGTG/finally.jpg">
As it was late for some of the folks, after some mingling around, people started to leave, and the car park began to revert to its oldself of what it is originally meant for -- providing a space for car to park, rather than as a backdrop for a piece of art.

The rest of the evening, was spent at Bugis's Sketch bar, with pastas and ice-lemon tea. The place, pitted to be the next Come-daily location candidate potentially, was filled with laughter and technical-mod knowledge, complimentary of Acedouble7, audibum and who else but our joker-king, Mr Karsoon.

Superior leadership by Karsoon, great coordination by ChewsChews &amp; Passatwolf, a hot-weather saviour from Subbie (for his waterboy job), wonderful photo shooting by the cameramen (Terence, Karsoon's friend, Miggs and the rest), and most importantly, a very strong support by VagSG.com members and their partners; Without all of you, we would not have the great photo taken today.
