Thats' BS. The ECU will adapt. Actually, you want to run at specified temps. leave it alone.

Default Funny you should ask about that...it's a PITA to swap out the thermostat, my friend and just did his

car today, and will be doing mine this weekend. It was easier to do cause we had the alternator off which made it easier to access. Here's the location. It's right under the intake manifold, just left of the alternator. Jeff is not completely correct, the coolant is regulated by a thermostat that opens at a certain temp. Jeff is correct that the car has an operating temp, but the new thermostat will makes sure it stays there better, esp on hot summers, cooling the engine sooner. You don't want to go below the 80*C thermostat, tho.

OEM starts to open at 87*C, and is estimated to be fully opened at 102*C. I replaced mine with a 80*C from VW (from a Jetta or Passat, p/n 056 121 113A, $75). You'll also need to replace the gasket (forgot the p/n, $3.50).

#1 is the thermostat and #2 is the gasket.

You'll want to unbolt bracket for solenoid valves and in front of intake manifold and detach dipstick tube. Lay the bracket to the side. You can now have access the bolts (#4). I think it's a 6mm allen wrench. We didn't drain the coolant, but worked really fast, minimal coolant was lost. I kept the thermostat in place and quickly unplugged and replaced with the new one. Just reverse the order to reinstall.

(Other mods were a custom oilcooler, ECS under pullies, higher fpr and the cooler thermostat)

While at Moroso two weeks ago, Champion ran the new RS6 racing cars, Randy Pobst suggested to my buddy that we do this to our TTs - especially because we have such highly modified TTs. Funny thing was when Randy told his this, it was driving my friend's TT hard on the track, showing that our cars can do 80mph AWD drifts. After the run, the brakes were all smokey and tire pieces were every where! So, I gather, Randy know's what he is talking about.

Will do testing next week! Hope this helps.
