Default Lining up Timing Belt on 2002 MK1 1.8t TT

So I blew my waterpump a while back, pulled the whole thing, installed the whole kit and put it all back together. I had my neighbor who's a mechanic come over and we set the belt solid (or so we thought).

Now I get the code P17748 and Rosstech tells that the timing belt is off. I took it to the local Audi/Vw gurus and they said that the belt is off about a tooth, not really getting boost but not really doing any damage.

They also want to charge me $1000 to do the timing belt job again and they say that they have to do the whole job with brand new parts. I get that part, they can't insure any work if they don't do the whole job. But I don't have another $1000 to have them do it. So I have to go back in there and do the job myself again.

The question:

How do I make sure, beyond a shadow of doubt that I have the belt lined up correctly because my neighbor and I must've missed something lining it up the first time.

Here’s a link to BlueTTop’s writeup from back several years ago. There is none better. Pay close attention to the part about counting the teeth on the belt that are between the timing marks on the pulleys. Good luck.

No. BlueTTop is the awesome one. I’ve used his writeup twice. Have a hard copy saved in case it ever goes away. He relinked all the photos to a different hosting site for all of us when photobucket stopped allowing sharing.
