Is the Mark 1 TT Roadster the scion of the 356 or a reincarnated 60s era MGB?
I used to have an MGB when I went to Penn. Ivy all the way. It was kind of a cult status thing to drive at that time... not unlike the original TT's hold on so many today.
I used to love walking up Walnut Street from Van Pelt Library and seeing that british racing green baby just glistening in the rain. It always rained in Philly but that was okay with me because the B always looked even more incredible to my eyes when it was all beaded up. I loved that car and even though it had a few glaring faults, it was so satisfying is so many ways. Just like our TTs. One thing the B had over the TT was the awesome sound from its 8-Track, 3 point speaker system with an 8 inch rear base speaker ported into the trunk... 'She came in through the bathroom window' ramped to volume setting 11... memorable.
Well, here we are so many years later and I was thinking in between tokes while standing in the garage and looking at the TT, "Damn if this isn't the car I always knew the MGB could have been if it were German!". And it's a good thing.
Back to the garage. I left a Martini out there.

Park them together, all three. Drive each. Decide
For me, the TTC is the spitting image of a 356 coupe. I've driven many an MGB and TR, and the TT is not of their ilk.

*in before the delete" ;)
you know michael, the roadster may be... (I had a yellow 67 "b" myself) but only the tt coupe evokes the exact same windows on the world as my old 1961 356 b coupe did.

Trivia for ya...VW acutally wanted the original TT design for their own as the Karmann Ghia
<center><img src="http://images110.fotki.com/v1114/photos/6/66370/266845/Picture085-vi.jpg"></center><p>Audi gave them a NO on that one =)
Not to say I wouldnt mind driving a New Karmann Ghia or whaterevr they may have called it.
That said after eight years of ownership and too much money poured into it making it something more than its desginers originally planned on...I still smile...Still admire the beauty in its simplicity, which I feel I have not deviated too far from in terms of looks...Now maybe in performance ;-)

Re: Karmann Ghia
I agree. A fast Ghia. I remember in 1969 being at the VW Porsche dealership and sitting in a 914 and a Ghia coupe and prefering the Ghia. Should have bought it. Bought an Opel GT instead. Somehow I have missed the experience of driving a 356. Need to fix that someday.
By the way Laguna, Good post. I keep Abbey Road in my player at all times. Best album ever recorded. (Stays right next to Santana Black Magic Woman)

when I was a kid I usta ride around in a 356..
that my father had for a few years. My TT does remind me of that experience a lot..and , I suppose (not being into nostalgia, or maybe admitting it) part of the reason I love my TT QC.
