mirrors always on?

Took meandering route to work to run errands. Result: Mirror warmers on when car is on, not ...
influenced by whether the mirror adjustment **** is in the center or left or right position. It was pretty hot, too. It was obviously well above ambient (90 degrees) but not too hot to touch.
That explains the lack of water spots on them, even with all the rain we had last week!

Pic of thermostat on inside of mirrors from tech bulletin.

I have the German rear view mirrors and they don't have these, so my example is not representative of the US norm.
I know there are 3 or 4 of you with the German mirrors. Do you recall seeing this thermostat prior to installation?
I have my original mirrors in a box at home. I will check them for comparison to the picture later.
