misfire issue please help!!!
I recently had a misfire on cylinder 2 which just happened to have a 10 month old coil pack. I tried switching out cylinder 2 coil with cylinder one. I then scanned the computer again with my VAG and it now read a cylinder 1 misfire. So I knew the coil was bad.
I took it back to Advanced auto since it was still under warranty and they had me a new one in the same day.
When i recieved the new coil a had my doubts it was new because it was not packaged and the part number stickers were removed from it for some reason.
I put it in my car on cylinder one. It drove fine for the first couple miles then the problem started again. I did not have time to deal with it again since I was on my way to work so I drove to work and back home with the car running poorly from the misfire.
This morning I scanned it and cylinder one was misfiring. I swapped the new misfiring coil with cylinder 4 and as i suspected 4 was now misfiring. So my new coil was now bad.
Now here is where I am lost, Even after I cleared the codes and I got the new code for misfire on 4 I still had a misfire on 1 code coming up! I tried swapping out plugs, other coils, making sure its plugged in properly everything Still a misfire on 1 code. The car stalls out if I try to move it but when I put the bad coil back in cylinder one with the phantom misfire it still runs like crap but does not stall.
Please does any have any ideas? Could the bad coil have damaged something else? Could I have damaged the engine from driving it with a bad coil? Any ideas???

short in the wiring harness (overplayed here but not impossible); plugs; >
and you should just replace all CP's. When you took it in to the shop, YOU told them what was wrong, or did you let them investigate? They could have pulled the plugs and checked them and other stuff at the time, but if you told them "CP" they can't help you much beyond giving you what you asked for/.02
The wiring harness insulation gets brittle and cracks badly - look at yours and see how bad it is and whether it might be shorting out - as I say, overplayed as a 'problem' but not impossible

Hey, my wires look like that too!
24 dollars from stealership to replace plug and wire sections to splice it back to health.
but once I replaced the bad coil, that was causeing the plugs to go bad, which was causeing new coils to go bad, I discounted the problem since the misfires all went away.
do your self a favor and move all the misfires to cylinders 1&2, then replace coils and plugs.

Re: like this. A recent diagnosis of similar mis-fires from a local MN Audi TT'r
My wires do look like that around the ends but I don't see where they are touching and shorting out. I guess its possible they could be arcing and shorting out causing a misfire.
I wonder, could this problem cause a coil pack to go bad prematurely? I think I might try putting a bit of silicon around the exposed areas. This whole thing has me frustrated.
I plan on ordering 4 new coil packs on ebay. For now I am going to return to Advanced to see if they will swap the coil out again.
