Default My timing belt install >>>

Well it's 4 years so after I saw that Sunday and Monday would be nice (I have to work outside) I figured this was a good weekend to get it done. I'll skip the long writeup since everything has been well covered many times already. The only thing I did a little different was to take the strut brace off since it gave me alot more room when futzing with the top timing belt cover. Also the VF Engineering mount is pleasure to remove when compared to the OEM one on that side.

So after the timing belt covers and the other bits and pieces, it was all going along smooth as can be, remove the tensioner roller, belt comes right off; dieselgeek water pump puller thingys, pump comes off fairly easy; get the water pump, tensioner roller, and belt on; and then it came to put the tensioner back on. I know this has been said before but what a pain in the a$$, I got frustrated to the point where I forced myself to stop and had to have a buddy come over and spend an hour and a half getting the damn thing back on. Personally I believe Audi's choice of fastener here was a poor one and what caused most of the difficulty. But after that everything went fine and the car started and ran properly the first time.

Just wanted to share. Thanks for listening. Have a nice day.

Evan

You put the tensioner on after the belt?

Default Yes >>>

Many people do it this way (including Oldschool). Otherwise you end up fighting with the belt trying to get it on.

Default Good to know...

Sound like you ended up fighting the tensioner instead :-P....When I did my timing belt I put the belt on last but I thought about putting the tensioner on last instead. However I was afraid with the bolt setup Audi used I'd mess up the threads/struggle to install it. Which ever way works for you, right. I found the fit to be very tight (as mentions 100x before) but with an extra set of hands it went right on. Nice job doing it yourself!!!

Default I guess there is no way around fighting with something

When I saw those bolts I was wishing I had an extra one or two.

I just did my timing belt last week (the same day I purchased the car) and did not even think to put the tensioner on after the belt, I will def try that next time.

Default it definitely works, but as eas mentions, you have to fight regardless....

I'm going to try it the other way around next time just for fun.
