Need Help: How do you get the QUICKEST START FROM 0?

My 225 is chipped and cat-backed but I find that I'm getting my ass whipped from lesser cars in 1st & 2nd gear, I'm able to catch them by 3rd and pass them by 4th but I find that I sometimes do not have that much time from light to light. Please help-I'm developping an inferiority complex!!!
