From the UK's 4 Car...
Porsche's entry-level hard-top to take on the TT
The next-generation Boxster, to make its debut in late 2004 or early 2005, will come in both coupe and roadster form. Coupe prototypes have been spotted testing in Germany - some disguised under 911 bodyshells - and it certainly makes sense for Porsche to have an entry-level hard-top to take on the Audi TT, Chrysler Crossfire, Nissan 350Z and so on.
The engine line-up is expected to comprise of three choices: the current 2.7-litre engine tuned for 240bhp or, in the Boxster S, 280bhp, or a new range-topping 3.4-litre version delivering about 300bhp, perhaps in combination with a stripped-out, lightweight body. However, Porsche will be wary of offering too much power in the Boxster, for fear of encroaching on 911 sales. Six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions will be offered, the latter with a double-clutch system similar to that of Audi's Direct Shift Gearbox.
The basic Boxster recipe will remain little changed, even though it now dates back to the mid-'90s, as the car is still a class-leader in terms of driving dynamics, handling and refinement. It will be a little wider, though, with larger bumpers and wheels (17- or 18-inch) and the styling will be tweaked: new headlights, a new grille and different taillights will all feature, with attention paid to differentiating the range further from the 911. The rear end will incorporate a larger retractable spoiler, and the cabin will be upgraded with more adjustable seats and restyled instruments and dials, and improved materials and fabrics. Rumours suggest that the most affordable model could start from just £29,000.

Since it's probably going to be 2005 or 06....
before the Porsche Boxster Coupe arrives here in the states, I'll get it after my 4 years are up from this Nov with the TT, that'll make it '07 and by then all the kinks of the first and second year models should be worked out and then it is time for my Porsche experience. - that should work

all the common people going in and buying a "mini 911"....great, just what i needed...to add to the stacks of goofs buying a 911 will be a stack of goofs THINKING they are buying a 911.

First we pump up the Iraq economy, then Germany......I may just buy a Ford.
A GT-40 would be distinctive and unique. Porsche is turning into the grocery getter car around here.

After the TT what other 2 door sports car is worth owning then?
cause if you discount the Porsche as being too common what other coupe is left that is worth aiming for? Hmmm maybe the Maserati but that is 3 times the cost of one TT. The new Jag? The new SL's are very common I see them all the time - so I wouldn't go that direction and for some odd reason I maybe saw 1 Lexus SC 430 on the road since it came out a year or so ago and all of a sudden they are everywhere too and with really young looking drivers racing with a front passagner and 2 in that cramped back with the top down.
So there really isn't anything else other than the Porsche to aim for if you are looking for something other than the TT. Please don't get me started on those BMW's which seem almost as plentiful as the Hondas on the road.

Thinking of Ford....
Those 2003-04 Ford Mustang Mach 1's are quite tempting with their shaker hoods 310 hp (305 hp for the '03 model) tons of torque at a fairly low rpm, and the ability to chrip the tires going into 4th - and for under $30K - yes very very tempting also taking in the fact that only 6500 were built.
A 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra with the 10th Anniversary package is also kinda tempting since only 2003 were built and it has 390 hp and an upgraded red and black interior.
Ah the American way - big monster engines and wads of hp stuffed into a car with technology from the 80's (and a chasis that dates back to the 70's).
