Default No front plates - legal or illegal?

Hey guys/gals,

Being fairly new here in California, I wanted to ask a stupid question. Is it illegal to take off your front licence plates in this state? I see a lot of nice cars without them on and it looks much better than with them on. If it is illegal, has anyone actually been given a fine/ticket for not having them on?

Thanks for your help.

I just got a fix-it ticket too. (sacramento, CA)

My advice: put it on after you get a fix it ticket, then fix it, then remove it. Hee! Hee!

I'm thinking they are enforcing this law b/c of the photo-enforced traffic lights. You know; the ones that take pictures of you and your car and your mistress as you pass through the light after it's turned red.

Default More cops checking...

A lot of people have done the "double sided tape" thing, but I've heard a lot more officers are pulling on the plate to make sure it's really affixed to the vehicle, and if you have to have a front plate bracket to pass the inspection, you may as well have a front plate...

Default It is illegal, but seems to be enforced in towns that employ photo radar the most...

SF, SJ, LA.... I live in the boonies with all the yuppies - lots of cars out here that have no front plates and the cops don't hassle much... guess that will change once the city gets greedy and goes for the photo radar systems....
