Default Oil pan replacement - help appreciated

First of all please forgive my mechanical ignorance.

The oil pan on my TT (180) is leaking at the plug. I've tried replacing the plug and even tried a larger plug, nothing stops the leak. I figure that my only option is to replace the oil pan. Is that something that is easy to do? From looking at the oil pan it looks like I just unscrew a few bolts and the pan drops out and I put in the new one - is that right?

The reason I ask is because the Audi dealership was going to charge me $400 just for the labor. That seems to indicate that a) there is more to it than I think or b) the dealership is ripping me off.

Any feedback is appreciated - thanks.

Default i would use some teflon tape first over the threads>>>

to see if that slowed it or stopped it completely before going down the big bucks lane....

Hmm, simple solution. I'll try that first - thx. Still curious about the pan if that doesn't work.

If you do that, make sure you use the "yellow" petroleum-safe tape...

Are you using a new copper crush washer? That's what actually makes the seal, not the threads...

Default It is pretty easy. There are 2 large bolts from the transaxle box to the pan, that's about it.

you will need a 5 or 6 mm Allen wrencgh, along with a 10mm socket, plus either a 16 or 18 mm socket.
do not remember exactly.
i had the same problem, so I replaced the pan.
you will need a tube of the "blue" silicone gasket seals-there is no toher gasket.

Default pretty easy, but....

there are two hidden 10mm screw up inside the transmission housing area. You will need a U-joint and extension to get at them. Also, the official VAG sealant is a tube of white silicone stuff you get from the dealer. There is no hard gasket. The proper application of the gasket material is very specific in the Bentley manual.

Default I'm assuming by your low member number that you're out of warranty

and don't have a CPO either. My dealer replaced my oilpan recently because they couldn't get a small drip to stop. They replaced it under CPO for $50.

I asked my service manger how much it would have cost if I had to pay for it myself and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of what your dealship is quoting you.

Good luck

Default I had the same problem a couple of years ago... threads were stripped, elected to change the pan.

Others have suggested a helicoil, but to drill it out and remove the cuttings you have to remove the pan anyway. You should be able to pick up a pan from World Impex for $175 or less <a href="http://worldimpex.com/search_by_partno.html?searchmode=partno&partno=038 103601ma&x=0&y=0">w/o sensor</a> or <a href="http://worldimpex.com/search_by_partno.html?searchmode=partno&partno=038 103603m&x=8&y=2">with sensor hole</a>
