Default Ok, it's official, my 225 has an eating disorder...

I checked the oil again at 8,300 miles and it was almost GONE! Remember, I had a similar problem around 3,000 miles topped it off and changed it at 5K. So, every ~3K, the car literally eats through 2/3+ of its oil. I'd place blame on the chip, but I didn't have the chip at the 3K mark when the engine began displaying this tendency.

I've never driven behind the car so I don't know if its spitting oil through the exhaust (a la: Rob pre-X chip), but I didn't notice a large buildup of carbon on the tips over the past 2 weeks when (gasp!) it went without a washing.

Any thoughts?

-Eric

P.S. Yes, the car got a thorough detailing yesterday - just in time for today's rain.

Default Did the warning light come on when you had low levels of oil?

My car "low oil level" warning light came on around 8,000 miles also.
If the warning light didn't go off, you should have it checked out.

Default

With that reminder, I'm off to change the oil (and rotate the tires) in the rain

Default No warning light. Just doing my due diligence. :)

If the warning light had come on I would have topped it off immediately.

Default I think you should check it more often...

It's not good to run an engine w/ so little oil in it. The consumption seems excessive. I've heard of older high mileage cars using a quart every 800to 1K.Just watch it & when the lease is up move on.

Default What do you mean "gone"..?...>>

using a quart of oil every 2500 miles or so before you hit the 10K mark does not seem that unusual around here. My car's doing the same. Turbo engines are hard on oil, especially if you're using a low viscosity synthetic.
If you're losing 2+ quarts, that might be a problem (but probably withing Audi's oil consumption specs). The have a procedure for testing oil consumption, others here have had it done. Check with your dealer if indeed it is 1 per 1200 miles....

Default I never lost a discernable drop of oil in my TT nor in my 1.8T Jetta.

I think something is wrong with your car, Steve.

Default 58 K A3 1.8T and a FWD TT .No oil loss never.

No help to your problem but yes something must be wrong. But also many modern companies including Mercedes and BMW say that up to 1lt of oil loss in 1000-1500 km is very normal. I don't know if it's really normal or they need to say so just to get rid of customer complaints.

Default 2 Ideas from an x-oil burner

It's probably not your problem, but two changes seems to have fixed my earlier oil consumption problem. First, check around the oil cap. Mine was leaking...a simple new gasket and cap fixed it. Second, I had a very bad habit of hitting the accelerator as I started the engine (a throw back to earlier years with a third-hand detroit car of questionale heritage). Since stopping this bad habit (no seven step program is necessry), I seem to have stopped burning oil and my tips are clearner.

I hope your problem is no more serious. Good luck!
