Default OT: PC memory question (Dell)

I'm thinking of buying a new Dell 8100 and want 256 megs of ram. Upgrading from 128 (PC600 RDRAM) to 256 costs an additional $240 through Dell. Is there any reason why I cannot buy a 128 PC600 RDRAM module from another source and install it myself?

Thanks.

They will check your ECU codes and void the warranty :-)

Default Well, Dell is funny like that. Their RAM slots are sometimes sized millimeters differently

so that you have to get RAM that matches. So you buy theirs or go through trial and error on your own.

This is personal experience with their corporate Optiplex line. Dimensions may be different.

I'm not concerned about that.

Default I just noticed your sig. "Quirk packages" I think I got that one too. LOL!

BTW, otherwise you can't go wrong with Dell. I have a Precision Workstation 410 at home and it is rock solid.

Default I just bought 2 8100's refurbs

Definitely check out Dell's Refurbished listings - you can sort by model, price, options etc. to find EXACTLY what you want for hundreds less than new!

I recently bought two 8100 PC's nicely equiped with 20g hd, 128mb and CDRW drives each less than $1000. They both have performed flawlessly and were in new condition.

I will probably upgrade the memory also and have found Kingston and several others market compadible memory, check Dell's auction sites or their Gigabuys online store.

I have no doubts that Dell would try to void with after market memory.

true, true, but you should be able to install the memory on your own.
