Default To Patch or to Plug? That is the question.....

I just bought a set of wheels and tires off of ebay. I get there to pick them up and the guy informs me (for the first time) that there's a nail in one of the tires. He says that he's been driving it for quite a while with no problems. Well, no big deal. I basically stole the wheels/tires from him for super cheap. Here's my problem. I can't find a shop that'll touch a 20 inch wheel for less than $40. Not to mention the fact that I really don't want scratches all over my new (to me) chrome rim. I've never considered a plug for a fix before, but these tires are going on an SUV and I'm trying to get these on quickly.

The nail is pretty thin, about 0.025 to 0.050 inches in diameter and is right in the center of the tread. What do you guys think about plugging the tire? Has anyone had any success in such an application? or worse, not had success?

FWIW, the tire is 275/45/20 and it's going on a Ford Explorer.

Default If it's really a small nail, then I don't see the worry.

If a plug fails, then you'll just get a leak, no?

I can't see how that would be any worse than a new nail puncture.

Default I had a 1/4 inch lag screw in one of my Michelins....>

Back when I first got the car and was 300 miles from home on a business trip. Plugged that sucker and never gave a minutes problem in the next 8K miles when I sold the wheels/tires....
