Purchasing Salvaged Audi TT

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a manual, 2002 225hp audi TT that currently has a salvage title in the US. It has relatively low mileage for its age (~50,000) and does not appear to have any body damage whatsoever.

It runs and drives, but the issue stated on the salvage title is that the ABS light and traction control warning light are both on. Is there any reason that both of these would be on at once other than the wheel speed sensors going bad? Also, is there a good way to diagnose these issues with and ODB II reader or other error checking system?

Thanks!

Although for the D3 A8's, This sticky applies to your TT. Diagnostic equipment and more explained.

A defective ABS sensor could be the issue. Remember, before the early '90's, not many cars had ABS nor traction control. It's no reason not to drive the car. Those indicator lamps are yellow, not red.

Can be wheel sensor. Can be an acceleration sensor too. They are mounted in the dash. One for longitudinal and one for lateral. There are probably other things that could cause this too. Impossible to diagnose without a Vag com scan. Good luck with figuring it out and rescuing that Mk1.

Great, thank you. I'll have to see if anyone in my area has a vag com scanner that I can use.

You may not be able to insure it. Have a body shop inspect it to make sure it was not wrecked. But with a salvage title saying ABS is broke, you may not even be able to buy liability insurance, even if it is repaired.
