Q: Taking off the front bumper...
Do I have to take off the wheels?
What are the tools necessary to take the bumper off?
any tips or advice?
maybe someone made a website detailing this process? thanks!

Yes take the wheels off so that you can get at the torx head screws that hold the wheel liners....
in place. But I won't continue with the whole proces because there is a complete step by step procedure with photos, that someone from England has on their site. I just can't remeber who it was. If you do a search on intercooler installs it might show up because that was actually what they were removing the front end for.

Yes you need to take off the wheels......
Tools required
-Deep socket set
-Torx Bit set
-Flathead and Phillips head screwdriver.
I think MichaelTT and SchwingTT might have some pics on their websites.

you can leave the wheels on if you want
I took the bumper off my car this weekend (with help from a local TT'er who'd done it before) and we left the wheels on. If you have a lift/ramp/jack stands you should take the wheels off because it makes life easier but you don't HAVE to.
Others here have documented the process so I'll wait for them to chime in with details rather than try to recall. If you get no joy drop me a line and I can tell you all I know :-)

turning the wheels allows you to get to these screws so you can pull the mud flap off

you can then pull the liner down to get to the rest of the screws

after you remove the flaps you can get the whole nose off the car. Follow this diagram for help...

You will be wise to have somebody with you to help pull the nose off without causing paint damage when it drops. You'll also want to either clamp the hose for the aliens or have some spare washer fluid around :-)
The hardest part for me was reaching and removing the ones numbered 13 in the diagram...
