Default Wait a few days and post again...

Dave (EconomisTT), the good Dave, Berson will be back from pre-Spring Training in FL. He has an Alpine headunit with the XM tuner. It rocks! Very clean set up. That's the way I want to do it (if I don't want XM in the house).

I'm not sure of the Alpine model number, but he said they only had one headunit at the moment that is XM-aware. Others will follow.

Default Because I have the Audi Nav system, I had to do a Sony unit with the FM modulator on stock headset.

happen to be very picky about sound, and do notice a little difference due to hiss that creeps in through the modulator. I suspect I'm losing a little bass as well. Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with the setup. I had the do a custom install and put the display unit in the compartment where the trunk button sits. Speaking of trunk, be prepared to have an ugly growth of an antenna on yours. It's like a fin for your TT. As for Sony's unit itself, it only has 5 presets. Actually, this turns out to not be a problem, as stations with the same genre are always next to one another on the channel list. The contrast could be better on the display. Surprisingly, the blue display doesn't clash with our red dash. In fact, the contrast is quite striking.

Stations themselves? They ROCK! I spent a 100 mile drive home yesterday yucking it up to stand up comedy. Also, I've discovered that I really like the African music station. And I love hearing a song on the radio that I like, only to look down at the display and see the song's name and artist so that I can pick up the CD later if I want.

So in short, in the interest of keeping my nav system, I stayed with the Sony unit.

Main Disadvantages:

Slightly lower quality due to FM modulator (maybe non noticeable to non-audiophiles).

Low amount of presets.

Contrast sucks.

Main advantages:

Unit can be easily removed and used in home (unlike Pioneer).

Parts easily removed and returned to stock if you ever sell the car.

Keep your nav system, if you've got it (as well as audio related displays on your instrument cluster).

Default We put an XM Radio in my wife's Beetle

She loves it and doesn't listen to AM or FM anymore.

We got:
Alpine CDA-7873. Works great. Don't need to spend the extra money unless you are hooking up accessories (e.g. sub woofer) or want a prettier display.
Terk SR-2 antenna. Tried the Terk SR-1 through the glass, but it didn't work. We think the installer shorted it out by testing (putting the pieces together) without glass in between (a real no no). Also, XM Radio is offering a $30 rebate on the SR-2.

Default I've got the Pioneer FM-modulated unit on stock Bose system...

I love it! I thought I would have trouble getting used to the extra antenna on the roof, but I don't even notice it anymore (I actually kinda like it). I haven't turned off XM since having it installed and activated about a month ago. I have a 180 TTC and had the TERK roof mount antenna placed slightly to the left of the cell phone antenna.

Default Re: Question

I was interested in the same thing. I went to Circuit City to ask about installation and stuff. The person there said that you could put the antenna under the front or back window. But he also said that they could not install it like that because they could not guarantee the signal. But you could buy it and if it did not work you could just return it or get the antenna installed on top.

I am uncertain if the tape adapter or the FM modulator have better sound. The Circuit city person said that the FM would be better, But I have my doubts. The FM radio might be better than playing a tape, but when you use a tape adapter you are touching one tape head to on other. I think this might have better sound. The FM is nice though because there is one less wire to see.

I am glad to here it can fit in the trunk/gas switch storage compartment.

Can someone tell me how they hooked up the power? The Cigarette Lighter?

Default FM modulation is imperfect, but hands down quality is better than tape adapter

I've tried both. There is much more hiss with the tape adapter.
