I took out the old temperature sensor and despite releasing pressure by unscrewing the lid from the overflow tank and letting the car cool down, about 1/2 a gallon of coolant spilled out.

I put the new o-ring in and then put the temperature sensor (attached to the wire harness) and then put the clip on. However, I can still pull it out quite easily even with the clip on. In fact, I can't figure out why the clip is even there. It doesn't seem to do anything. I must be doing something wrong.

Is there any trick to putting the new one in?

Is the old O-ring out? Sometimes that sticks in there... Also after releaseing the pressure in the tank you should have put the cap back on so that way it would flow out slower... The suction would have kept most of the coolant in... If you left the cap off there would be no suction...

Old o-ring is out. I didn't put the cap back on! Thanks.

You need to push the sensor down into the fitting a bit harder.

If you restored the clip but can still pull out sensor, then the sensor is not seated properly. I hope your half gallon of coolant did not run all over your garage floor or driveway.
