Default Recommended I replace the transmission, Need advice

Hi,
I have not been on the forum for years. I have a 2000 TT Coupe Quattro (Mk1 suspension, no wing) It has been chipped, upgraded the exhaust, JE Design wheels, sport springs. All done when I initially bought it. Now I have 102K miles on it and am getting lots of road noise and vibration. (recently aligned and new tires, this did not effect the symptoms)

Shop says the front differential had a leak and they saw metal shavings. Says it is about $2500 to replace front differential. But he also said it was highly likely shavings are in the transmission and since the front differential is included with the transmission I should replace the whole package. Will throw in doing the clutch for just parts since they are disassembling anyway. Quoted $6.5K.

I am not a car guy.

Does this sound like a reasonable scenario based on the symptoms?

Is that a competitive price?

I do like the shop. This is a trust but verify situation

I want to keep the car. I like it, I am the original owner

Any advice is appreciated

being a 100K+ and a slightly modified 11yr old car, your car is barely worth 6.5K(sorry to say...i hate this fact too). take it to a tuner shop and your quote will be much less. or just sell the car as-is and gain 5-6k

Agreed. Find another shop as that quote seems very high, or sell it and cut your losses.

Beyond that, transmission noise is VERY different from road noise. Any transmission is going to have some form of metal particulates in the fluid when drained. I would definitely recommend a 2nd opinion. Based on your description, I don't think it has anything to do with the transmission.

Took it to a different and highly recommended shop. They flushed the differential and said it may have had the wrong fluid in it. Final diagnosis was a bad wheel bearing and hub. Replaced those and she is running great. No vibration and all road noise gone. (at least back to normal)

PLEASE go punch that other "mechanic" in the face and tell him he needs to learn a little more about cars before telling someone to repalce all this ****. **** him.

Even if you don't punch him, let him know the REAL fix. :-)

I had to replace my tranny recently and got a factory refurb unit, including the diff, for about $1500 shipped. It arrived friday and I'm picking the car up tomorrow, but it arrived as advertised. I got it from europetoamerica on ebay. The guy is legit. Not sure your transmission code, but you can call and talk to him if you need. His number is 888-468-0688 and his name is Ron.

EDIT: Didn't read down far enough. Good to see you're fixed. However, I'll leave the post up because it's a great deal if you need a tranny. This guy has complete engines and longitudinal trannies as well.
