Default Remote functions . . . plus a rant at the end

Hello;<p>A while back there were several discussions re: having the remote lower the windows as you can with the key. The always helpfull Jason Dale mentioned that he would be looking into it. I am wondering if he or anyone else knows the conclusion to this.<p>Answers to the two obvious questions; 1) I am in the U.S. 2) I do not want to plug in the box some have used on Beetles.<p>Thanks,<p>rc<p>BTW just because I do not give my e-mail address, I am not a crackpot with nothing valid to say or ask. I am just someone who values his privacy. <p>Granted, some people take advantage of the annonymity to flame or just to **** others off. Well hell, thats just too bad. Along with the free exchange of ideas that is encouraged, we must not forget that enclosed may be some ideas we do not agree with. <p> THUNK! <--- (the sound of me stepping off my soapbox)

rc, what "box" are you talking about? Am I missing something?<p>I inquired about the remote issue to my dealer, and they said it could be done, that it required the re-programming of the remote, which they could do, but it voided the warranty on the remote, and they charge for the service. They've done a few I guess, but that's an expensive little gadget to replace, and I opted not to mess with it.

Default Don't know about TT, but on A4........

A4.org has the info in the FAQ under coding the control module, many have had it done if you can find a dealership who is willing, Mine was not.

My A4 didn't come with the remote but I ordered one through Carlsen Audi in Palo Alto, CA. I asked them to program a couple of specific settings in it as well but not that one. They charged me for the remote but not the coding. I just tacked the whole thing onto a factory oil change. Since the A4 is wired for the remote whether you get that package or not, it was veyr simple. The whole thing cost me roughly $100. Could I go back and ask them to reprogram it? Probably but I would need to pay them for their time at that point.<p>Rick R.<br>Waiting for TTS Roadster<br>98 A4 2.8 many mods

Hi,<p>My (Dutch) TT is originally supplied with an Audi alarm with remote control. This remote control is integrated in the key and can be used to:<br>- lock/unlock the doors<br>- lock/unlock the trunk<br>- arm/disarm the car alarm<br>- open/close the windows (by keep pressing the lock/unlock button for a few seconds)<p>I would be surprised if this doesn't work for you guys in the US.......? Do you have the original Audi alarm set?<p>Regards,<p>AlberTT

Default Re: OT: Best car magazine

I get subscriptions to Automobile, Car and Driver, sometimes R&T, and sometimes European Car. Here's my take:

I've been getting Automobile since '88, so it feels like an old friend, but it's the most lacking in information and reviews. It just isn't as packed with articles like C&D and R&T.

C&D has the most information and news. It also has Brock Yates, who I like quite a bit. He is the most eloquent red neck good ole boy I've come across. I find his stuff amusing.

R&T doesn't grab me as much. I"m not sure why. The best thing going for it is Peter Egan, a REAL classic car enthusiast, and a pleasure to read. I usually just grab R&T off the newstand when there's a car of interest in it.

European Car is very hit and miss with me. It's quite tuner oriented, which isn't a big interest of mine. It does cover Audi better than most magazines. It occasionally comes up with good stuff, like the various series on good used car buys.

I used to get Autoweek, which was a great source of info. I grew tired of it's format, though.

For some reason, I've never taken Motor Trend seriously. Maybe it's because of the goofy cars they select as car of the year. Maybe it's a good magazine. I rarely pick it up.

I subscribe to Road & Track, Car & Driver, and Autoweek. I refuse to read Motor Trend because their car-of-the-year is for sale to the highest bidder (pretty obviously too when you look at past car-of-the-year winners). Of the three, I like Road & Track best because of its highly scientific approach to presenting the facts. For example, they always tell you their confidence window for numbers (they call it a significant difference in their Road Test Summary). For example, in testing braking from 60mph, 10 ft is the confidence window because the same car on a slightly different section of road or different tire temperatures or different road temps might vary as much as +/- 5 ft. So if car A stops in 125 ft (best of three tries) and car B stops in 130 ft (best of three), a fourth try with car B on a warmer day and/or different track might very well match or beat car A.
