Report on Vortex Shift Cable Mod...>
1. Pull shifer boot and then lock shifter with the DG "special tool" (nail)
2. Remove TTDA from SAMCO intakek and battery cover
3. Lock transmission
4. Pull silver clip from one cable end, unbolt 13mm bolt from the other one. Unclip the cable ends from the cable and remove.
5. When you look at the cable ends (hold with plastic cable clip end down), you'll see that the center section, which has the bushings and the trans linkage pin and bolt go through, is held in by two narrow pieces of rubber at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. The space above and below is open, allowing the center to move fore and aft as the cable is moved. This gives some slop in the shifter when the lever is moved, as there is a good bit of play in these ends. What you want to do is shim up that play.
6. I used some 1/2" inside diameter hose I had that is hard plastic, fairly thin-wall. I cut a section about 3/4" long, stood it on end, and cut that in half. This gave me two half-moon pieces, which I inserted in the arcs around the center bushing. The second one was a little tight to get in, but you can "persuade" it.
7. The corners to the outside of the arc are hollow, and I used Loctite silicone sealer to fill these, all the way through, then smoothed the outer faces of the end. When dry, the shims you put in can't come out.
8. Slide the cable ends back over the cables, but don't lock. Put the bolt back in on the bottom arm, the silver clip back on the side one. Then, with the cables straight into the end, re-lock the cable ends.
9. Un-lock the transmission while pushing down on the DG slightly (long screwdriver makes it easy to pop the pin back out)
10. Pull the nail and test. Reinstall boot.
RESULTS: As the Vortex guy said, this really tightened up the shifter. makes a lot of difference in the fore-and-aft gear engagement as the DG did. You know immediately that you're in gear.
I think this would be a good mod for the stock shift linkage, too. With short shift kit, even better.
