Is it required to change tensioner and roller with timing belt...
water pump and thermostat after 60K-65K?
I went to a local car shop and they said that Audi recommends changing tensioner (belt?) and roller with timing belt. They gave me an estimate of ~$1000. I went to another car shop and they said tensioner and roller were not necessary and gave me an estimate of $600 (after much crying and whining about how i was a student and needed a discount of sorts .
Its frustrating how the timing belt for Audi costs about $70 compared to about $15 for a honda. In addition after market (read cheap) timimng belt (and many engine parts) are also not available. Audi really sucks at this.

im a student too. do it all.
you CAN do just a belt, but then it's going to fall off once you drive a few miles more... annnnnd then you're in the pit 5,000 dollars, not 1,000...
do what i did: sign up for a credit card and pay it off.
welcome to student TT ownership

Change it all...The Tensioner is one of the potential failure points....>
(guys have taken them out in seized condidtion)
Belt, Tensioner/roller and water pump are mandatory at the change. Your second shop dies not know what they are talking about. You can buy the complete kit for $275 or so with ALL parts needed.

if the shop will replace your engine for free
if they guarantee the old tensioner and water pump will not fail, then by all means, go for it.
*it is a general rule to replace ALL of the components related to the timing belt

The tensioner and roller are very important...
as the tensioner is the usual culprit in the breakages.......
As far as the cost goes....probably a look at the sheer numbers of Hondas out there compared to Audis will point to at least part of why the parts are cheaper.
And, yes, change the water pump too.

Or perhaps the lower cost creates the demand thus higher numbers. Chicken --- Egg which comes first? Economics is a fascinating subject with almost no absolutes.
