Standard troubleshooting techniques apply;
Fuse, switch assembly, wiring/connector may be faulty.
Diagnostic scan may be helpful, may not be....
The two switches are interchangeable to help troubleshoot.
Remove radio, above radio slot is the switch retainer that you pull down a bit to disengage all switches. Push switch out, disconnect connector.
See service manual for more details.

If/when you need to get at the switch you will need special radio removal tools. I bought the on Amazon. These are just stamped sheet metal so they are sharp, when you pull the radio you will want to pull with pliers or wear gloves. Excellent write-up https://www.audiworld.com/forums/tt-mk1-discussion-9/blinker-relay-replacement-piece-cake-1899376/ by SparTTan on accessing the switches. The trickiest part is getting the feel for opening and closing the latch that holds the switches captive. With the radio tools and the right touch on that latch you should be able to get that switch out in under 5 minutes.
While you have the radio pulled out I suggest you snap some pictures of or write down the serial number in case you ever need to contact Audi for the security code.
