Default So today a vacuum hose caught fire!!! now fluttering DV

I had 1/4" "fuel line/vacuum hose" from the local pepboys between the charge pipe and the engine cover by accident. I recently painted the charge pipe so when putting it back on I must have missed this. It's the line that goes to the top of the DV.

Last week before I left for San Diego I noticed a big boost drop. Since I didn't have time to check it out I just put the car in the garage and got on the plane.

Upon returning I drove my car for about 30 minutes today. Found myself at a stop sign before a friends house on the way to pick him up and goto the gym. Noticed smoke coming out of the hood, drove slow, parked in front of his house about 10 seconds down the road and there was a little fire under the charge pipe coming from the crappy hose!

What an adventure. Time to carry a fire extinguisher in my car! I bought new vac lines, routed it the correct way and have no problems>>

EXCEPT under any boost when lifting off gas and normal DV sound initiates it's just a fluttering nose. The more boost the longer the flutter. It's a forge 007p w/ 2 washers & green spring and I have never had problems.

Any thoughts? Am I the first fire victim of my own stupidity? haha just figured i'd share a dumb story

Default I just replaced all my vacuum hoses and noticed...

that because of my stage 3 DV relocation, the replacement hose which you are referring to was too long and was originally routed too close to the exhaust manifold heat shield. I subsequently cut it shorter to keep it away from the hot stuff. Didn't think it would be flammable.
Cheers

Default I'm just glad nothing else was effected by the fire & water used to put it out! Ordering silicon

kits asap, have since routed the hose a real long way around the front of the motor. but its safe for now. any ideas why my dv flutters?

have you guys seen anyone use the Forge motorsports compressor to charge pipe 90' elbow once I'm replacing stuff over by the fire...

Funny thing was I just did the same thing Fred, replaced all essential lines with new ones when I had the PCV system & intake manifold out for cleaning and painting.

Default Replaced all water lines as well since front end was off...

at 105,000 why take chances. As for the fluttering dv; you may have corrected a pre-existing boost leak with the new hoses. Call forge and theyll send you a new piston. Their costomer service is excellent.

Default Fred: it's not a diaphram based valve. it's their piston valve... i thought you just had to greese

them up a bit every now and then?

if i take a peak inside is there anything i should look for while i lube it up?

Default Make sure the O-rings...>

are not flattened (so you get a good seal). If you don't have one of those little vacuum pumps to test operation, just push the piston in and put your finger over the small nipple. If the piston remains in the Up position it's holding vacuum OK. If it gradually closes, you may need new o-rings. Forge will send you a set N.C Lube modestly with synthetic grease.
