I for one don't think its totally appropriate. I like what they did with the beetle but then they should do something more with the TT. For example, how come the Turbo S (that is the beetle not the 993 Porsche :-) ) comes with 6 speeds? And the TT comes with 6 spds in EU but here.... 5 speed for the 180 !!!
Oh well.

I know. I meant the 180hp. Everywhere else its sold as a 6 spd. Yet here we get 5. I wasn't...
necessarily talking about the engine. Although I do think a car with more than 225 is due !
How come a car which is 10,000 (at least) less pulls the same #s as the TT... are we paying only for design? (Even if we were, I would still get the TT over any other).

This is exactly why VW advertised the original NB turbo@150hp rather than it's real output....
The Beetle turbo has always had 180HP. This was proven down at Neuspeed on a chassis dyno back when they first came out. They did them back to back against a stock 180 fronttrack TT. The numbers came out to within about 3% of each other.
Then, just a few months ago, I had a NB turbo on a dyno before I started doing mods. This car('01 model) was putting down 157hp at the wheels, showing an approximate 15% parasitic drivetrain loss, resulting at 180hp at the flywheel.
The bottom line is that VW didn't want to **** of the TT owners so soon into production.

TT does not equal BEETLE...
...and THAT'S the bottom line.
I traded my base model 2000 Beetle for a 2001 TT 180 coupé fully aware that the Beetle Turbo S was coming out this year. However, the same engine doesn't mean the same car, especially when it comparing these two. Visual and ride impressions count for a lot, and quite frankly, for someone who commutes 5 days a week at an average of 27mph (L.A. freeways), doing so in TT is a whole other experience than the same slow ride in a Beetle, no matter what's under the hood.
