steering wheel alignment
 

Finally getting to work on some little things on the TT that I haven't considered pressing. Since I have owned the car if I want to go in a straight line I have to put the steering wheel about 10 degrees clockwise from what I would consider the correct position where the 2 steering wheel arms are horizontal. I assumed the steering wheel had not been properly lined up with the steering column, no big deal. Today I got the air bag off and pulled the steering wheel nut and lo and behold, the steering wheel alignment mark and the steering column mark line-up perfectly. Below is a picture of the steering wheel showing the marks lined up and the position of the steering wheel when the front wheels are pointed straight.

I am guessing the steering column is not lined up on the other end, either at the universal joint or going into the steering rack. Is there any reason to chase this down further? I have owned the car for over a year and driven several thousand miles without any steering problems so I am inclined to move the steering wheel over a couple of notches on the steering column so it is level when the car is going straight and forget about it.

I would say somebody did a lousy job aligning this car. Have you ever had an alignment done? I would expect that you now have different turning radii left and right. Your tie rods are most likely not equal on both sides. Maybe something is bent and they did a quick and dirty adjustment. I would take it in for a proper alignment. It should uncover the true reason. That steering wheel is quite off center, so something isn't right. A little bit off center can happen after an alignment, but not like that.

But yes, you can move the wheel a couple of teeth and nobody but you has to know aboot it. I'd definitely have the alignment checked and corrected if necessary first though.

I just purchased a BlueDriver code reader that can do enhanced codes. It reports code P0778 which it says is "Brakes Code" for "Steering Angle Sensor (G85)(778)". Making an appointment right away to get that steering checked out.
