Temp gauge creeping up is this sender problem or cluster problem?

Looks like the gremlins have set in.
Over the past 3 days the temp gauge has moved past vertical and now sits steadily over to the right - see pic
99.9% sure car is not running hotter
anyone know where the sender unit is for the temperature gauge - just in case it is this that is failing and not the instrument cluster?
thanks
Kevin

or, maybe it's a cooling system problem?
i had an erratic temperature reading, but it was always low. would jump to middle but never read high. sender replaced 2 days ago, and now it's back to normal.
check the climate control diagnostic #49 -- it's a digital readout of the coolant temperature. my gauge followed the readout, so I surmised that the sender was faulty, not the gauge/cluster.
the other option is maybe it's reading high because the temperature is actually high?

It's because of your aftermarket gauge faces ;)
Just kidding. Mine did this too and stopped creeping at about 2 ticks higher than it is supposed to be. I have hooked the car up to VAG a few times and the temp is reading ok, looks like the cluster is in need of replacing tho.

Details inside.
On the climate control, press the up arrow and recirc buttons at the same time. When you do this, you should see "1C" on the display meaning you're in the diagnostic mode or whatever you wanna call it. Turn the **** that you use to set the temperature until you see "49C" on the display and then press the recirc button. You'll get a digital readout of the coolant temp in degrees celcius. Straight up on the guage is 90 degrees, but you'll see the digital guage fluctuate a bit. If you're over 105, the needle should start moving over to the right.
You can also check your engine temp at 51C. To get out of the diagnostic mode, press the Auto button.

Thanks - coolant temp steady at 90^C looks like cluster problem
Although when the weather improves I think I will remove cluster and reset gauge pointer to vertical

Had same problem 2 years ago. They never found out what was doing it. They replaced ....
most of the cooling system (except for the H20 pump and the radiator). After all that it finally stopped doing it.

I believe that is the cluster problem, I just had mine replaced last week. When you turn the car on, (even if it's really cold outside) does the temp gauge always start off a little higher?
They had to replace my entire instrument cluster... I ended up getting a 2002/3 instrument cluster since I have things on there now that I didn't have before.

You wouldn't have anything that identifies the other...
... parameters displayed in the climate control panel. I had 'em for my S4 but lost the sheet a couple of years ago.

Here's what I found in the search.
While most of these are correct, I know some of them are incorrect. For instance, 49 measures the coolant temp (same thing the temp needle shows), not the speedometer malfunction counter.

https://www.audiworld.com/tech/int6.shtml</a
