Default Are there any functionality differences between Ross-tech and ProDiag?

I don't have a personal laptop, and prefer the smaller size of the interface needed for ProDiag. But I don't want to buy a product that isn't as powerful (for near the same price). Also, how do you guys know what numbers to use to "recode" your modules for unlocking/flashing lights/etc? Are those in a manual somewhere?

Default limitation seem to be with Palm as much as s/w ...

I have the ProDiag and it seems to be able to do what the Ross-Tech does, but within the limitations of the Palm device -- it does not have much memory to store a database of codes, it can't hold a big pile of scans and graphs, etc. Ross-Tech will allow you to view multiple measuring blocks at the same time, for example, and the screen and processor of the Palm just won't allow that. You do give up something for the convenience of the Palm -- if you're really gonna dig around in there, you probably want the Ross-Tech, esp since they're about the same price.

Default I've had both...and prefer the Pro-Diag for portability and always having it with me...

on the other hand, the VAG-COM can generate nice looking graphs from logging, etc. which the Pro-Diag lacks. I really use the funtions from the Pro-Diag more than I did with the VAG-COM so for me, the Pro-Diag gets my vote.

it all depends on what you plan to do with it. Since you want to recode and clear DTCs and CELs, etc. and want the portability, go with Pro-Diag. If you want serious logging data, etc. go with VAG-COM. with either or, you can recode your locks and do all the other cool stuff with it.

I was more Mac-based...although I had a tiny ThinkPad 240 for the VAG-COM...just hated to wait for boot up and sometimes ran out of juice from sitting around since I mainly use a PowerBook all the time.

Hope that helps.

Do you know if VAG-COM can be used on Mac using PC emulation software? I too am a Mac man (since 1984!).

Default Thanks guys. Looks like I might go with the Pro-Diag since I'll probably never....

dive too deep into teh modules. Just simple logging and clearing codes and recoding modules. Thanks.

Default the answer is yes...but its slow and I ended up using the ThinkPad just for the VAG-COM.

especially since my 240 was ultra tiny compared to the larger ones.

Default no prob. it'll save you some dollars since you won't have to buy both like I did.

Default Another vote for ProDiag...>

An added benefit of using the PDA is that you don't have to wait for the Palm to boot up, nor disable your PC's antivirus software, which can interfere with Vag-Com's communications.

ProDiag clears DTC's and code modules. <b>Where do you get the coding?</b> Ideally from your car's repair manual (ie, the Bentley). Also check out the various forums (on here and Vortex). Although they are populated mostly by Vag-Com users, the coding is identical so if Vag-com can code it, so can ProDiag.
