Are there any side effects to failing Secondary Air Pump? Anything to worry about other than pump?

I had a code pop up in VAG a couple of times in the last few months.
From what I've read, when these things fail, they tend to first throw codes once in a while and then finaly RIP. I just wanted to make sure that if my sec air pump is not functioning 100% properly, than it will not cause any serious damage to other components. I'll wait for it to fail completely before/if I replace it.
