Default things to do before chip

O.K. I have been reading a bit trying to find out what I should before chipping my car. Are motor mounts necessary? I know making sure the hoses are all good is something I should do, but is there anything else?

The person I am going to have do the chip suggested motor mounts.

Default wash your hands.

motor mounts shouldn't be a problem unless it's a very high mileage car. Some folks have replaced the dogbone bushing but that's more for shift feel than anything else.

Default you'll probably want a Diverter Valve such as a HyperboostHX... then

Modshack Stage 3, exhaust, Samco intake hose, etc etc etc

Default A chip can cause a borderline MAF to "fail". Also a borderline DV may have problems.

No upgrades are needed, prior to chipping. It is easily the best power/$ ratio item you can get, and you can get big benefit from it on an otherwise stock car. After being chipped, you can start adding other items to tweak a little more out of the car, but you will never get so large an increase in performance from any other part (except a turbo upgrade, which is in a WAY different league!).

Default I would say install the chip, then keep an eye on things like hoses & DV & MAF.

Replacing things that aren't broken is kinda silly.

But that's mostly post-chip stuff.

Default motor mounts are not the first thing people have in mind...although i have done all motor

mounts and do not suggest it...maybe just the pendulum mount only. the side motor mounts really anchor the engine to the chassis and you really feel the car whether it idles or at any speed. i couldn't even see out of my rear view mirror when doing 60mph on the highway since it shook so much. in fact, most of the rattles that i have now are attributed to the motor mounts.

to reduce the vibration, i took one of the motor mounts out, took the pre-load off of the remainder one. it still vibrates more than anyone here and is annoying at times. there are better ways to spend your mod money before motor mounts IMHO.

Default Cooling system enhancements

the TT's engine monitors heat very effectively (via detonation sensors and intake manifold temperature monitoring) and dials itself back quickly to avoid damage during sustained high power demand. Prevent heat buildup and the ABSENCE of heat/detonation intervention makes your car noticably faster. The stock programming is aggressive enough to drive the engine into heat soak (percieved as power loss) on a warm day. Chips increase boost, ignition advance, and alter fuel mapping to add power... and MORE heat is the direct result.
Any mod you do to help your engine dissipate heat more efficiently, or prevent heat from being fed to the engine via the intake tract, will enable your tuning to make consistent power, cold OR hot...
a few possibilities:
1) an FMIC
2) cold air feeds
3) superinsulated TTDA
4) insulate the intake manifold (EvoShield)
5) move engine oil cooling from the radiator to external "oil to air" coolers
6) diverter valve relocation
7) water or water/methanol injection

The effects of these mods are cumulative. The more you do, the better it gets!

Default The only thing you should do before you chip it is >>

make an appointment!!

You're going to love it! Aside from that...the other guys have posted the need-to-knows. Get a good DV - along with the chip if you can. And be preppared for the MAF to go bye-bye.
