Thoughts are 3rd party air intake such as Pflo or AireTek like systems? Do they make a difference

only real benefit seems to be increased
noise if you like that kind of thi8ng....however possible maf issues as well as sucking in more under hood heat...so perhaps actual performance drop is possible...more asethetic than anything else..

Well..... unless you do an excellent job of insulating the intake filter like TTschwing >&

they seem to have a great propensity to heat soak. Steve is using the LL-Tek intake which is very similar to the Neuspeed. His is VERY insulated and keeps the temperatures inside the box very close to ambient temp outside. I've seen it, and it works. I had a Neuspeed "Hot-air" intake, and based on the butt dyno, it felt like the car actually lost a step with it installed. The killer part of any CAI is the whoooooooooooosh/psssssssscht you get on accel and shifts. I do miss that. It was kinda like driving around in a WRC rally car. Kewl sounds IMHO.
Some of the CAI's like the Airetek, have a standard style cone filter with the end open. The Neuspeed filter was actually blocked on the end, which didn't allow any direct airflow. Basically the air would come in from the factory snorkel piece in the fender then into the "sheilded area" created by neuspeeds heat shield. The problem is that the shield is made up of 3 vertical sides, in other words, hot air is allowed to travel over and under the shield. If you've lifted your hood after a nice drive lately you know that the temp in the engine bay is substantial. I just couldn't help but think that my intake was ingesting a large amount of hot air.
There has also been a considerable amount of discussion regarding the cars ability to use any extra volume of air anyway, due to restrictions in the MAF etc... I'm not enough of a tech guy on this late model computerized $hit to give you any better 411 than that.
If I were to do one now, I'd prolly use the
Aire-tek and fab up my own insulated box. Right now I'm using a K&N drop in filter in the stock airbox. Some of the serious tech freaks on the forum, which I have a huge amount of respect for, have done actual empherical testing with the
Vag-Com etc... and basically shown that there is no gain to using the CAI, and in fact that there is a loss in power. I believe that if you use the CAI as if comes from the manufacturer, that is the case. If you are to make the modifications, and insulate it well, I think you'd pick up a little throttle response/power/kewl sound.
My humble opinion only. Subject to flame and correction.
