I just did another 1.8l turbo belt and am reminded that the VW/Audi OEM timing belt made by Gates is much easier to install (less forcing of the belt over the camshaft sprocket) than the aftermarket ContiTech timing belt.

I was quoted anything from $800 from a foreign auto mech to $1500 by audi dealership to change the timing belt. I followed this guide, along with my bentley repair manual and everything went like clock work. Timing belt kit was $150 and took 2 evenings.

I totally agree, your car is way to clean! Excellent write up I think I will have to try and do mine myself next time except I will have to clear away years worth or crud first.

Wow! Like the others said, great write up! Well done.
I recently bought an '04 TT Quatro with 86k miles. As I learned more about the car, I decided to change out the timing belt before things have a chance to go boom!
I used an ECS kit and followed your guidance. Thanks alot for taking the time to gather the information and photos in such a well made "how-to"!
With your help and a few others, I was able to change the coolant (flush), reservoir, spark plugs, timing belt, serpentine belt, thermostat and housing!
I nervously turned the key and she started right up!
Now on to the brake fluid and Dzus fasteners!
BTW, Hi and I love this car! And that is a heavy compliment considering I just came from a 335I.
Cheers,
Richard
I know that I am reviving an old thread. But I had to say "Thanks"!
