TT recieves 2001 "Coupe of the year" honors
From article in Auto Express UK:
"The Audi oozes desirability - it is beautiful to look at, fast and very easy to live with"
Following a creatively dry spell in the early Nineties, Audi has reinvented itself as one of the world's most progressive and forward-thinking car designers. And much of that stems from the TT.
Bold, immaculately built and packed with exquisite details, the TT represents a landmark of automotive design which has hardly cahnged from the original bold concept car. Not only does it look amazing, it's one of the most rewarding cars to drive in the class, which is why we had no hesitation in handing it top honours for the third year in a row. From the tip of its sculpted nose to the tail of the discreet boot spoiler - added to tame the car's controversial high-speed handling - the Audi simply exudes sophistication and good taste.
Climbing into the brushed aluminium and black leather cabin is like being transported into another world. Many cars since have tried to cash in by copying some of the TT's more distinctive features, but none has come close to emulating its appeal. A reach-and-rake adjustable steering wheel is complemented by highly adaptable bucket seats to provide a superb driving position, while there are plenty of places to store odds and ends. There is a pair of child-size seats in the rear, which can be folded flat to make a surprisingly practical boot space. At the heart of either TT coupé, however, is the German manufacturer's highly acclaimed 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. For this application, it is tuned to produce either 180bhp or a stomping 225bhp in the flaship variant. The latter is our pick, costing £2,750.
With a quick-shifting six-speed gearbox and the benefit of Audi's quattro four-wheel drive, the TT 225 is a super coupé for all seasons. It sprints from 0-60mph in only 6.4 seconds and feels securely planted to the road right up to its 151mph top speed. Devastatingly quick across country yet safer than many saloons, the gorgeous TT is the finest Audi since the car maker's quattro kicked off the whole four-wheel-drive revolution in the first place.
