Our guess would be channeling.

It's a king thing. Royalty (eg., Duke) always refer to themselves in the 3rd person.

We thought royalty often used the first person plural.

Default Duke is certainly not royalty, although he appreciates the promotion, JPC, it is just that...

Duke finds it easier to express himself in this fashion. It takes the "ego I" out of it and makes the "observer" the one who speaks. The ego tries to exploit all situations into forms of praise for itself in order to overcome its fears. Duke's observer is more compassionate, understanding, and mature than his ego, but then, so is everyone's. It allows a perspective not allowed in "real" life, because everyone would think Duke insane if he started talking this way. And while that observation is not hurtful to Duke's career if relegated to The Forum, it would, trust Duke on this, end his career in a nanosecond.

While smallTTs' response made Duke laugh out loud, it is not channeling. Not that Duke wouldn't be willing to channel someone meaningful.

Thanks for asking, TTinGables.

Mark Twain commented that first person plural used only by kings and people with tapeworms.

Default Um, Duke...

...I'm just throwing a wild guess out here, but do you, perchance, work in the psych field? I'm sure Duke's career would be cut a bit short if found using this form of expression on an everyday basis if this is indeed the case:-)
Jason Dale
