Default Two more questions about chips.

Not wishing to play the role of skeptic, but if
chips increase power by roughly 10% for only $600 or so, why doesn't Audi put them in as standard equipment?
Secondly, exactly how are chips installed on the TT?
Thanks.

Default Probably more related to tightened emission controls ie: CARB than anything else cause

in Germany you can order off the sweet ABT menu at dealerships for your TT

Default I think it is more for quality control then anything else, except my emissions in the US

But honestly all engines are not created equal. I think they tone down performance to the point where fewer problems present themselves rather then giving the customer the max. performance at the cost of added stress to key components. I think it comes down to the $$$. Would Audi sell as many TT's if they ran at max power vs. if they ran at degraded power? I mean sure they might not sell QUITE as fast, but they would sell no matter what. Plus I think we have shown that Audi is very $$$ picky. They would rather sell at car at $40,000 and spend $3000 on repairs over the warranty period. Rather then spend $10,000 over the same period because the higher boost or whatever caused more small defects to pop out. Just my 2 cents.

Default All cars engines are de-tuned. Audi isn't alone. It has to do with reliability and has

nothing to do with emission. Chips and other speed parts are made for almost every performance car. Example: you could purchase a Z06 Corvette and install and a supercharger and have a 500 HP car thats emission legal.

Default Boost is regulated to maintain a brake mean effective pressure of 19.73 bar in the cylinders

during the period of peak torque. It would cost Audi $0 to change the boost, fuel & timing maps to what the chip tuners use. It's based strictly on durability (emissions testing is never done at this power level). The new Bugatti 8.0 L W16 has similar limit settings of 19.7 bar during peak torque & 18.4 bar at peak power. They manage to get 987 HP & 6000 rpms & 922 ft lbs @ 2200 to 5500 rpms. Very similar to the TT's peaks at 5900 rpm & 2200 to 5500 rpms. Only difference is W16 is 4 valve. Compression ratio is the same. If you use the metric power and torque units you will see it is exactly the same per liter as the 225TT. 8.0/1.8 736/165 & 1250/280

P.S. left side of graph is charge absolute pressure, right side brake mean effective pressure

graph link
