This is why I am not a professional mechanic...
If you haven't been following the saga, I put in a new steering rack this weekend. This involved dropping the entire subframe and disconnecting all sorts of hoses and crap to get the old rack out. I put the new rack in and reattached everything. I drove off (from sTTevo's heated garage) to get a loud rubbing or grinding-type noise.
I had the car towed in to CPT yesterday, since it needed an alignment anyway. They found that a power steering fluid line was rubbing against the axle, and now needs to be replaced (according to them). So the subframe will need to be re-removed to get to it. Al is looking up the cost of the part and calling me back. If it is not too too expensive, I might just have them do it, since the car is there already (and shouldn't be driven).
What a major PITA. I thought everything seemed to go back together too easily... but that's the risk I take trying to fix **** myself!

wow man thats some bad luck...... balh....... could the hose be rebuilt by a local shop?
i had a power steering line rub a hole in its self on my golf (same basic car as a TT) and a local shop was able to cut out the part w/ the hold and rebuild the hose. only cost me 25buks vs. 250 from the dealer for a new one. i looked in the phone book and called a local hydrolic shop that advertised they repair/build hose's.

That hose is NOT cheap....>>
as i recall when schwings broke it was over 300$...but that is from my memory! ;-)
Schwing had someone actually weld his and it has been fine since...10$ it cost him IIRC...

Yup...BTW, Hose comes off without dropping the subframe...>>
I pinholed mine on the metal area and got it TIG welded...If you blew it on the rubber section figure $250 for the hose...

Must be a different hose then?
He told me $67 for the part this afternoon, and they have to drop the subframe to get to it -- about $200 in labor. (So about 2.5 hours at $80/hr).
I'll be sure to get the old hose back...
