Update on my cyl #4 misfires: frayed coilpack wire (part #s inside)..>>
this is apparently fairly common on the older cars that don't have the coilpack wire heatshield (standard on later (2001+) models).
The 'repair' for this is to buy a new overlay harness and use that to replace the wires in the engine harness that run from the coilpacks to the ecu:

I still need to... for now I have some silcone on the backside of the connectors to cover the cracks
The wires up there take a beating with no heat shielding of any kind. Especially at the bends, the insulation just starts cracking away from the wires. I know there was TSB out to fix this on the VWs when they come in but no such luck on my TT with 82K miles on it.
