Waiting for my TTRQ225 and have some questions.
It arrives in September so I cannot wait but I have some questions. I have been reading alot in the news group and still have some basic questions. I am not a mechanic so forgive my lack of knowledge on some of these issues.
1. What is the big deal about the Baily Valves? Should I even need them. What do they give me?
2. Is the DV problem fixed or is it occuring in certain models? Will my new TTR be corrected at the factory?
3. I am 6'1". How is the head level with the top down. Am I going to get my hair blasted?
4. Are there any Mods that I should really think about? I am not against modding my car but I see some guys with 15 different mods and such and I am wondering what are the real mods and what are the "riceboy" mods.
5. Will upgrading the turbo to the K4 void the warranty?
Thanks in advance.
Future TT owner.

Re: Waiting for my TTRQ225 and have some questions.
I am also waitting - my sentence ends this weekend I hope (just trying to organize financing for a car already reserved for me and sitting on the dealer's floor)...anyway your questions:
1 Baily valve would solve the dv problem (this seems to happen to all TTs eventually and is common on the 1.8t engine) so that takes care of 2
3 I'm also 6'1 and thought the level was just fine when I test drove the roadster but your hair will get blasted in any convertible car. Learn to live with it or wear a hat! (or buy the coupe like me!!)
4 with a 225 the only mods i'm considering (eventually - after I've had time enough to get used to the stock set up and find its limits) would be a chip (not many out there for the 225) and some coilcovers.
5 don't know but I suspect it would.
Enjoy the wait - i know it's a pain but it will be worth it.

1) if you don't have a DV problem (I don't after 1900 miles - knock on wood)
I would (am) wait(ing) to see if Audi addresses it down the road. If you don't need it, I wouldn't address potential warranty issues. Of course if I start honking ...
3) can't comment - but check out my hair below
4) er, um, could step on some toes here (not that I never step on toes!!)
5) 225 has a KO4!

On the topic of TT "Rice" (College essay length)
I am going over in my head the list of regular posters and the mods they have made to their cars. To ME "rice" means modifying your car in such a way that adds nothing performance or quality wise or does not reflect a sponsor or the brand of an actual part on the car.
You can "improve" the stereo by replacing the head unit, speakers and amps, but adding 1 Bazooka tube is "ricey". If Bazooka tubes really are good, don't flame me, I just pulled that outta my ****.
You can add a sticker or decal, but only if it represents an actual mod on your car. My front windshield reads "Autobahn Performance" which I always joke about as adding 10 HP. I got it because it is the name of the shop that put on my new brake pads on that added performance (not rice) AND the name was generic enough it sounded cool to me and makes my car distinctive in my hometown, as the company is in GA!
Decals that advertise for a sponsor are especially cool, IMHO. It means you are getting your money's worth out of your TT.
BUT, a "NITTO" decal in 1-foot wide yelllow letters diagonally across the right front quarterpanel is RICE if you have Nitto tires and nothing else from them. I mean, your car already says Nitto four times, right? (Guy at work with an Eclipse that he doesn't show, doesn't race, nothing, has this and I cringe every time I see it!)
An updated ECU, lowering springs, coilovers, Borla or Scorpion exhaust add quantifiable performance and therefore are not "rice".
In the TT's case, a drop in K&N is "rice" as it offers no performance gain on this car, IN MY OPINION. I know this one will ruffle some feathers, but I have one and it did nothing. I have seen quantified G-Tech and dyno printouts that prove this. For the TT.
Lowering the car so that you can't drive over a nominal speed bump isn't ricey, but it makes no sense to me!
I have never seen a TT with a coffee can exhaust, and if I ever do I WILL take their keys away from them, so help me G-D. Total RICE. Not to be confused with Rice Chex. Get it?
I am undecided on body kits. Some are functional, like the rear underbody spoiler that ExTTreme has and that infamous spoiler, but some, like the Hoefele nose, don't add performance. But this is thin ice I am treading here...
I really wish I could think of another word for "rice" but the word has grown, IMNSHO, to mean more than the Japanese compact car set. It still has derogatory racial roots, but everyone here knows what it means, don't ya? Make a suggestion. Anyone that has met me knows I am the least racist, bigoted person in the world.
Hmm, proof reading this note before I post, I realize that with the sticker, the K&N, the bra, the roof rack that I haven't used yet, my car is borderline rice, huh? LOL
Ivan

Grade =A. Length sorta short for liberal arts school. You said what we were thinking,
but more eloquently.
Could "RICEBOY Chex" be the next hot breakfast food? Lots of empty calories, but very little nourishment?
Thanks!

Interesting analysis. I was in a "rice cooker" (sorry) last weekend...
I dropped in on a car show out in Pomona that I heard would have a fair number of specialty German/Euro performance shops exhibiting. In reality, it was 95 percent Japanese import tuners and a small area with 3 Euro tuners. (One shop had a TT with Oettinger wheels and the shop's windshield decal but no other discernable mods.)
The atmosphere at the show was unreal--lots of absurdly modified Civics and Integras, plenty of scantily clad young Asian women signing posters, and lots of guys taking pictures of the girls and the cars. And was it LOUD!
I enjoy a good circus as much as anybody but that was a very surreal experience. And you can imagine what the streets around the show were like--lots of young guys in their super compacts outgunning each other at every opportunity. It made me feel like a grandpa as I tooled my TT calmly back to civilization....

Re: On the topic of TT "Rice" (College essay length)
if you do acknowledge that "rice" *IS* derogatory to asians, why use it? being politically correct does at least keep the possibility of offending someone at a low.
Some of my friends who say they're not racist in anyway, and some who even claim so just because their wife, girlfriend, best friend is asian or latino or black or whatever, don't seem to act the part. They say it's just slang... that as long as they come off as non-racists as possible, it's acceptable to use such terms. I disagree. While this is not a real serious matter, I still think it does reflect on a persons character to use such terms to describe something or other, racial or otherwise.. It's rather similar to cursing, if you think about it.. one gives people the impression that you lack intelligent vocabulary, while the other gives people the impression that you're stereotyping (yes it's subtle, but the most common form of racism). It boils down to two things: 1. how you want people to see you. 2. how you feel about perpetuating stereotypes. I associate rice a part of my culture, however if it the word is used to describe something negative, then, yes it's offensive.
It doesn't **** me off, personally, only because I'm because I'm used to it (I've lived here in southern california for 25 years), but I choose not to not perpetuate racial stereotypes by using derogatory slang, and try to set an example for my students (I teach a beginner martial arts classs in huntington beach).

And you, sir or madam, have a reason to pick on ole Ivan, don't ya?
We had a little exchange here earlier, and now you are trying to paint me in a corner.
SUGGEST A DIFFERENT WAY OF PUTTING IT, THAT IS WHAT I SAID. Remember, be constructive. It's how to win friends and influence TT people.
Ivan
