well, after looking in the "search" for 45 minutes, I finally figured out
why small diameter wheels are better in the winter. :-)
The winning answer was from a lost resource - Jeff Bipes.
So who thinks they know the answer? ;-D Now I do.

more weight on less surface = less slide?
weight spread over wider tires gives less control. you want to cut through as opposed to slide on top. that is what i understand from the theory.

width is part of the equation...
that I got right away. It was why 16" is better than 17" rims I needed to know. When a wheel is smaller in diameter the patch is smaller in the axis that runs parallel with the car. Seems obvious now. ;-)

I was at the Bipes garage yesterday
He's doing well, still modding his car and it looks great. He did this remote start thing thats pretty cool, and his front end looks great.
He was also working on some A4 headlights.
But he's pretty much done with AW.

it all doesn't make sense to me ...
he said you needed a smaller diameter so that you have a larger sidewall to "cut into" the snow. what is the difference if it's the side of a tire, or the metal of the rim cutting in?

Bob, may I suggest if you are looking for a winter set up
you consider Nokian tires on 16" wheels. WRs for more performance driving, Hakkapalitta for full winter grip.
We've been using Nokian's for years on the Volvo and I have WRs on the TT. While the WRs are consider an all season tire, with all the snow we had last year, I never had an issue...ever.
