We're back from our first recon trip to Harper's Ferry, WV and it looks like we've got our outing...
...pretty well planned.
First off, I'd like to thank Dave B. (EconomisTT) for joining me on this mission this morning. We really had fun and the weather couldn't have been more perfect.
We're going to stick with September 22nd and we made dinner reservations for 20 (optimistic??) at the Bavarian Inn, which happens to be the place where Dave and I ate lunch today (thanks for buying Dave ). Lunch was fantastic and I think you'll all really enjoy dinner there.
So here's a sample itinerary for the day:
Meet in Rockville/Gaithersburg MD at around 9:30 that morning. Depart at 10:00.
Take a nice meandering drive up Rt. 28, 15 & 340 to Harper's Ferry (about 1 hr 30 minutes).
Park the TT's and take a shuttle ride into the historic area.
Eat lunch at any of the nice spots in historic Harper's Ferry. This will be very casual and people can go wherever they please in groups of any size.
Meet early in the afternoon for a pre-arranged, guided tour of Historic Harper's Ferry by a National Park Service ranger.
Free time to shop and hang out. Walk across the foot bridge to the C&O Canal, etc.
Meet late in the afternoon for a spirited drive up 230 to Sheperdstown for dinner at the Bavarian Inn. By the way, we checked with the inn and there are rooms available for the night of 9/22 if you want to consider spending the night. It's a very nice place. They're about 45% booked so call ahead now and book your room (304) 876-2551.
For those returning home that evening, we figured the VA crowd will split from the MD crowd and head straight down to VA.
So how does that sound? Ineterested?? Mark September 22nd on your calendar. I really think this is going to be fun.
Here is the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/hafe/home.htm" target="_new">national park service web site</a> again.
Here are a few pictures from our trip today:
View down the Potomac from atop the hill

The same view especially photographed for Jason.

The church on the hill...and WHAT a hill!
<img src="http://members.bellatlantic.net/~media1/harpers/HarpersFerry5.jpg" />
We won't be parking here.

I like the second pic best!!! Any where the steeple is obscured by the bottle?
With apologies to the pope, et al... hee, hee...
That would be very symbolic of my beliefs (opiate of the masses and all) re: organized religion ;-)

so come on down and let folks meet you in september, amanda -- and find out...
why the dc/md/nova folks are the best tt group around!
seriously, it should be a great time and one of the best things about this forum is the times that those of us on it get together to do stuff.

Are you actually a real life economist? I only ask because I have a grad. degree in resource econ. (Claremont). If so, we break the mold - most economists drive horriblty sensible/pragmatic vehicles like Ovlovs and such... eccchhh!!!
