What is the fuel cleaner stuff that clears up your fuel gauge sensor? I ran out of gas tonight.

Exact same reading here, ran out of gas. I attributed it to frying the electronics... >
...while cranking on a nearly dead battery. Is this really just a fuel gauge sensor? I was going to send back my cluster for rebuild, thinking it was fried, but none of the other gauges is off. A full tank sends the needle way off to the right, where it stays for much of the time. Watching the trip odo quite carefully these days....
I have tried techron at least twice since this happened with no changes...maybe I need Sal's "BG" stuff?

Techron didn't fix mine
Used 2 bottles (black bottle). It might have been too far gone already or whatever (40,000+) but had to replace FSU.
My problem was reversed though so factor that as well. It had 5 gallons and showed empty.
