Default What gear do you park your car in?

I had been taught to leave my car in 1st gear. But I got in my cousin's A4 and noticed that he parks in 4th. That triggered my curiosity. He said 1st got use the most, so he rather use another gear. I phoned my buddy, he leaves his M3 in 2nd.

My understanding is that it doesn't matter which gear to use because the car isn't moving. What do TT drivers do?

1st... I never thought that it'd make a difference; I've seen 2nd, but not any others.

The lower the gear the better it will hold the car still. 1st or reverse depending on the slope

1st...Most resistant to rolling away on a hill due to the ratio multiplication...

Default Just got off phone with 2 friends. TSX in reverse and G35 in 3rd...

Didn't know there would be such variety. All personal preference, I guess.

Default Ratio multiplication?

Can you tell me more about it? Or point me to where I can read up on it?

Default Here goes.....>

Crude example:

In 4th gear, one turn of the drive wheels results in the engine turning against compresion slowly..YOu can almost push a car in a high enough gear with enough effort...

In First gear, one turn of the drive wheel results in many more turns of the engine, therefore more compression braking possible preventing the car from rolling....

YOu can get scientific by looking at the final drive ratios in various gears (see drop down specs at the resources tab above)
